Hogs Close Wednesday Mixed

Lean hog futures were mixed on Wednesday, with contracts anywhere from 45 cents higher to 15 cents lower in the front months. The national average base hog negotiated price was reported at $83.49 on Wednesday afternoon, down 83 cents from the day prior. The CME Lean Hog Index was reported at $82.11 on January 27, up 17 cents from the previous day. 

USDA’s FOB plant pork cutout value was 45 cents higher in the Wednesday PM report at $93.31 per cwt. The loin, butt, and ham primals were reported lower, with the belly leading the way higher, up $3.69. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Tuesday was at 483,000 head, with the week to date total at 1.45 million head. That is 102,000 head above last week but down 20,993 head from the same week last year.
